Walsh, James M. & Leana B., House
historic place
The James M. and Leana B. Walsh House stands in Austin's Tarrytown neighborhood. This historic place is an example of Mission Revival architecture. It features limestone quarried from a nearby source and red, Spanish-style clay roof tiles. The house was built in 1926 for James Martin Walsh and his wife, Leana Brunner Walsh. James Walsh, born in 1882, was the third son of William J. Walsh, an Irish immigrant and prominent local lime manufacturer. James continued the family business, the Austin White Lime Company, contributing to the development of the Austin area. The house was constructed on land that was part of the original 100 acres purchased by William J. Walsh in 1874 for his lime business. Leana Brunner Walsh lived from 1881 to 1956. The property received designation as a City of Austin Landmark in 2001. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. In 2016, a historical marker was erected, recognizing it as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. The Walsh House is historically significant for its architectural style and its direct connection to the Walsh family's influential lime industry in Austin.
