West-Bremond Cottage

historical marker

The West-Bremond Cottage, located in Austin, Travis County, Texas, is recognized by a historical marker erected in 1976. This "Shotgun" house was built around 1872 as servants' quarters. It originally stood near the home of Charles S. West, a Texas Supreme Court Justice. In 1885, banker Eugene Bremond acquired the property. Emma Grant West purchased it in 1906 and moved it to its current Nueces Street location for rental use. After being owned by teacher Katie Gannaway, attorney Byron Lockart purchased and restored the cottage in 1973. As part of Austin's Bremond Block Historic District, this cottage illustrates the evolving history of properties within this notable 19th-century neighborhood.
