West Sixth Street Bridge at Shoal Creek

historic place

The West Sixth Street Bridge at Shoal Creek in Austin, Texas, is a historic stone arch bridge. It was constructed in 1887 from local limestone. This bridge replaced Austin's first bridge, a narrow iron footbridge built in 1865 at what was then called Pecan Street. The city council approved its construction in March 1887, and it opened in July of that year. Originally planned with two arches, it was built with three arches, spanning 90 feet long and 80 feet wide. It connects the western and central parts of Austin. The West Sixth Street Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 18, 2014. This bridge is one of Texas's oldest masonry arch bridges and represents early urban planning and civil engineering in the state's capital.
