Westhill, Austin, Texas

historic place

Westhill, a historic place in Austin, Travis County, Texas, is also known as the Chandler-Shelley House. This Greek Revival home was likely constructed around 1855. Tradition suggests architect Abner Cook, who also built the Governor's Mansion, designed Westhill. It features a grand double-gallery entrance with six fluted Greek Doric columns. The house was originally built for Reuben and Mary Runner. Later owners included F.W. Chandler and H.E. Shelley from 1863 to 1909, and the May Thompson family from 1917 to 1969. Restoration efforts began in 1970. The Texas Historical Commission erected a marker for Westhill in 1974, designating it a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Westhill remains a key example of antebellum Greek Revival architecture in Austin.
