Hinchee House

historic place

The Hinchee House, a historic place in Beaumont, Texas, is located in Jefferson County. It was built in 1906. Caroline Gilbert Hinchee, born in Beaumont in 1863, was an artist and teacher. She married Martin Luther Hinchee in 1900 and gained wealth from her family's Gilbert Oil company. She purchased this property in 1900. Architect Henry C. Mauer designed the residence, completed in 1906, featuring Queen Anne styling with Classical Revival influences. The house included a tiled roof, a wraparound veranda, stained glass, and a red stone foundation. It also had one of Beaumont's earliest residential elevators. Caroline Hinchee was active in the First Methodist Church and a charter member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She lived in the home until her death in 1913. The Hinchee House was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1982. It reflects Caroline Hinchee's community leadership and symbolizes Beaumont at the turn of the century.
