Idle Hours, Beaumont, Texas
historic place
In Beaumont, Texas, stands the historic place known as 'Idle Hours.' Built in 1903, this house at 1608 Orange Street was designed by architect Frank T. Smith for L.P. Ogden and his wife, Cynthia. Mrs. Ogden named it 'Idle Hours' as it was then considered a country estate. The house exemplifies Classical Revival architecture. Its historical significance led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It was also designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1982. 'Idle Hours' has served as a private residence and, for a time, a non-profit facility. Today, it remains a private home, reflecting Beaumont's architectural heritage and early 20th-century growth.
