Lamar State College of Technology Administration Building
historic place
In Beaumont, Texas, stands the Lamar State College of Technology Administration Building. Completed in 1959, this structure was designed by local architect Llewellyn 'Skeet' Pitts. It features a distinctive circular, or 'doughnut-shaped,' modern design. This may have been the first circular administration building on a U.S. college campus. The building served as a capstone to the campus master plan Pitts developed in 1941. Its construction occurred during a period of rapid expansion for Lamar State College of Technology in the post-war 1950s, as the institution focused on engineering, science, and technology. In 1975, the building was renamed the Otho Plummer Administration Building. This honored Otho Plummer, a respected alumnus, regent, businessman, and former mayor of Beaumont. This historic place in Jefferson County was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. It represents a significant architectural and educational development in Beaumont's history.
