The Mildred Buildings of Beaumont
historic place
The Mildred Buildings, located in Beaumont, Jefferson County, were constructed between 1929 and 1930. The Austin Company of Texas designed the complex. Miles Frank Yount, founder of the Yount-Lee Oil Company, commissioned this complex. He made his fortune during the second Spindletop Oil Boom of 1925. The buildings were named for his daughter, Mildred. This Mediterranean Revival-style complex cost $700,000 to build. It includes a three-story apartment building, a commercial-retail building, and a garage. The apartment building features terra cotta glazed brick, projecting bays, hipped-roof porches, parapet walls, and a red tile roof. The commercial building features an arched pedestrian arcade, a terra cotta parapet with finials, and three towers. The Mildred Buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. In 1999, the complex was designated a Texas Historic Landmark. This site provides an example of Beaumont's architectural development during its oil boom era.
