Bedford School, Bedford, Texas

historic place

In Bedford, Tarrant County, Texas, stands the site of Bedford School, a historic place marked for its educational legacy. The first school in the Bedford area began in a log building during the early 1860s. After the Civil War, classes moved to a frame structure located north of this site, in Spring Garden. Following a fire in the early 1880s, Milton Moore deeded land here for the construction of Bedford College, an academy that served as both an elementary and high school. This institution was also destroyed by fire in 1893. Local citizens then raised funds for a new elementary school nearby. This was replaced by a two-story brick schoolhouse, which was dedicated on July 24, 1915. Bedford School later consolidated with the Hurst-Euless district in 1958. The building continued to be used until 1969. A historical marker was erected in 1980 by the Texas Historical Commission to commemorate this site. This location is significant for its role in the development of education in the Bedford community.
