Hawkes, Z. T. (Tip), House
historic place
The Z. T. (Tip) Hawkes House, a historic place in Cedar Hill, Dallas County, Texas, was built in 1899. This two-story, wood-framed residence was home to Zachariah T. 'Tip' Hawkes, a railroad section foreman. It is a significant example of an "I" house, a traditional folk architectural style, featuring a full front porch and a one-story "T" wing. This property is one of only two "I" houses in Dallas County to retain its architectural integrity, and the only one with a "T" wing. It typifies middle-class housing from the Southern tradition. Tip Hawkes sold the home in 1920. The Z. T. (Tip) Hawkes House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and carries a Texas State Historical Marker. This site offers insight into late 19th-century Texas architecture and domestic life.
