Stafford Bank and Opera House, Columbus, Texas
historic place
The Stafford Bank and Opera House in Columbus, Texas, was built in 1886 by R.E. Stafford, a cattleman. The building was designed by architect N.J. Clayton. It featured a bank and dry goods store on the first floor, with an opera house on the upper floors. The stately interior of the opera house seated 1,000 people and included gas-burning chandeliers and an elaborate hand-painted curtain. Notable performers such as Lillian Russell and magician Houdini appeared here. Special trains brought audiences from distant towns for performances. A historical marker was erected in 1969 to commemorate this site. The Stafford Bank and Opera House stands as a significant example of a multi-purpose commercial and entertainment venue from the late 19th century in Texas.
