State Highway 3 Bridge at the Colorado River
historic place
The State Highway 3 Bridge at the Colorado River is located in Columbus, Colorado County, Texas. This Parker through truss bridge was constructed between 1931 and 1932. Work began on October 24, 1931, and the bridge was completed on November 14, 1932. The Austin Bridge Company built the bridge under contract, with the Mosher Steel & Machinery Company fabricating the truss spans. The project cost just over $128,000. This bridge replaced an older, unsafe truss bridge from around 1898. In 1928, an accident on the old bridge resulted in one fatality. The State Highway 3 Bridge at the Colorado River was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 10, 1996. It is significant for its engineering, representing the Texas Highway Department's practice of combining standard designs for long crossings.
