Britton-Evans House

historic place

The Britton-Evans House in Corpus Christi, Nueces County, was built between 1849 and 1850. Forbes Britton, a Virginian and U.S. Military Academy graduate, had this classical revival house constructed. Britton, a partner in a shipping firm, also served in the Texas Senate. During the Civil War, the house served as a Confederate hospital in 1862. In 1866, it became a hospital and officer's mess for the Federal Army. The house also provided refuge for citizens during raids in the 1870s. George F. Evans purchased the property in 1880, and his family owned it until 1936. The Corpus Christi Area Heritage Society has owned and preserved the house since 1965. This historic place was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1966. The Britton-Evans House is recognized as the oldest existing structure in Corpus Christi, offering a direct link to the city's early development and its role in significant historical events.
