Galvan Ballroom

historic place

The Galvan Ballroom, a historic place in Corpus Christi, Nueces County, opened in 1950. Rafael Galvan, Corpus Christi's first Hispanic police officer and a businessman, commissioned architect Everett E. Hamon to design the streamline moderne building. The two-story structure housed retail on the ground floor and a 9,000-square-foot ballroom upstairs. Galvan built it as a permanent venue for his children's band, the Ralph Galvan Orchestra. The ballroom hosted various events, including wedding receptions and school dances. It featured jazz, big band, swing, and conjunto acts like Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie. The Galvan Ballroom was notable for showcasing Hispanic musical talent and welcoming people of all races during an era of segregation. The Texas Historical Commission erected a historical marker for the Galvan Ballroom in 2016. It remains an important site for its musical and cultural history in Corpus Christi.
