2618 Warren Ave, Juanita Craft House

historic place

At 2618 Warren Avenue in Dallas, Texas, stands the Juanita Craft House, a historic place. A historical marker was erected here in 2010 by the Texas Historical Commission. This Craftsman-style bungalow, built in 1925, was home to Juanita Jewel Craft from 1950 until her death in 1985. Craft was a pivotal civil rights organizer and public servant. Her home served as a hub, hosting national leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and President Lyndon B. Johnson. From this location, Craft advised the South Dallas NAACP Youth Council. She helped desegregate the University of Texas, North Texas State College, and the State Fair of Texas. Juanita Craft was also the first Black woman to vote in Dallas County and served on the Dallas City Council. Today, the Juanita Craft House operates as a museum, preserving her legacy in the civil rights movement.
