Bluitt Sanitarium
historic place
The Bluitt Sanitarium, a historic place in Dallas, Texas, is housed in a building constructed in 1904. Dr. Benjamin R. Bluitt, an African American physician and surgeon, established the sanitarium in 1906. Dr. Bluitt was the first African American surgeon in Texas. His sanitarium provided the first hospital facility for African Americans in Dallas. This institution was built, owned, and operated by black professionals, addressing a critical need for medical care during the era of segregation. Dr. Bluitt maintained his practice in this building until 1914. The Bluitt Sanitarium building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. It stands as a reminder of the efforts to provide essential healthcare services to the African American community in early 20th-century Dallas.
