Busch--Kirby Building

historic place

The Busch--Kirby Building was completed in 1913. Beer magnate Adolphus Busch developed this 17-story skyscraper as a retail and office complement to his nearby Adolphus Hotel. Designed by Barnett, Haynes & Barnett, it features Late Gothic Revival architecture with terra cotta details. The Kirby Investment Company acquired the building in 1919, and it housed the A. Harris department store. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, with a boundary increase added in 1996. After the 1980s downturn, it became Downtown Dallas's first high-rise converted to residential apartments. This building reflects early commercial architecture and urban revitalization in Dallas.
