Dallas Tent and Awning Building

historic place

The Dallas Tent and Awning Building is located at 3401 Commerce Street in Dallas, Texas. This historic structure was constructed in 1921, opening in January 1922. It served as the headquarters and manufacturing facility for the Dallas Tent and Awning Company. At the time, it was the largest tent and awning plant in the South. Architecturally, the building displays the Commercial Style, typical of early 20th-century industrial structures. Its design includes simple ornamentation and reflects the Chicago School. Situated in the Deep Ellum neighborhood, the building was part of an area developing into a manufacturing and wholesale district in the 1920s. Later, the Murray Company, a manufacturer of industrial equipment, owned the building. Today, it has been renovated into an apartment building. Designated a Dallas Landmark in 1994 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999, it signifies Dallas's early 20th-century industrial growth.
