Hotel Adolphus, Dallas, Texas

historic place

The Hotel Adolphus, a historic place in Dallas County, opened on October 5, 1912. It was built by Adolphus Busch, co-founder of the Anheuser-Busch company. Busch aimed to establish Dallas's first grand luxury hotel, designed in the Beaux-Arts style by Thomas P. Barnett of St. Louis. Constructed on the site of the 1880s Dallas City Hall, the 22-story Adolphus was the tallest building in Texas for several years. It became a significant center for business and social events. The hotel hosted U.S. Presidents, including Warren G. Harding and George H.W. Bush, and Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1991. It also served as an entertainment hub, featuring big band musicians and KRLD radio broadcasts from 1936. The Hotel Adolphus was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It is recognized as a Dallas Landmark and a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Its architectural design and historical role continue to mark its importance in Dallas.
