Hughes Brothers Manufacturing Company Building

historic place

The Hughes Brothers Manufacturing Company Building, located at 1401 South Ervay Street in Dallas, was constructed in 1903. Designed by Dallas architect Harry Overbeck, the building incorporates elements of the Chicago School, along with simplified Romanesque and Classical design. Initially, this structure served as a manufacturing plant for the Hughes Brothers Company, producing items like vinegar, baking soda, preserves, jellies, and candy. The company's name, "Hughes," is incised above the main entrance. The building was the largest in a complex that marked the Cedars neighborhood's shift towards industrial uses. After the Hughes Brothers Company ceased operations around 1938, the Gulf Cone Company moved into the building in 1941. They manufactured ice cream cones here until the late 1990s. The Hughes Brothers Manufacturing Company Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 27, 2016. Its history reflects the industrial development and changing character of the Cedars neighborhood in Dallas.
