Majestic Theatre, Dallas, Texas

historic place

The Majestic Theatre, a historic place in Dallas, Texas, opened its doors on April 11, 1921. Theatre pioneer Karl St. John Hoblitzelle built this five-story structure as the flagship for his Interstate Amusement Company. Chicago architect John Eberson designed the building. It features a Beaux Arts exterior and an opulent Baroque interior. Originally a vaudeville theater, the Majestic later transitioned to showing movies. The theater closed in 1973. The Hoblitzelle Foundation then gave the Majestic to the City of Dallas in January 1976. After a major restoration, the Majestic Theatre reopened on January 29, 1983, as a performing arts venue. It was the first Dallas building listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. In 1983, the Texas Historical Commission erected a marker here. The Majestic Theatre remains a significant historical landmark in Dallas County.
