Miller, John Hickman, House

historic place

The John Hickman Miller House, a historic place in Dallas, Texas, was built in 1904. Dallas businessman John Hickman Miller commissioned this residence as a wedding gift for his wife, Katherine Melone. Miller was the son of William B. Miller, a pioneer area settler known for Millermore. This house is a significant example of Shingle Style architecture, a transitional style between Victorian and Prairie. It is one of the few remaining Shingle Style homes in Texas and the only known one in Dallas. The exterior features shingles, a gabled roof, and a wide veranda. Inside, the house includes a large basement area. A historical marker for the John Hickman Miller House was erected in 1980 by the Texas Historical Commission. The house was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and designated a Dallas Landmark in 1981. This site is historically significant for its distinctive architecture and connection to an early Dallas family.
