Monroe Shops: A Dallas Transportation Landmark

historic place

Monroe Shops, a historic place in Dallas County, Texas, was originally erected in 1914. This facility served as a crucial streetcar maintenance barn for the Southern Traction Company and the Texas Traction Company. These companies later merged to form the Texas Electric Railway, and Monroe Shops housed the daily operations for repairing and maintaining their electric railroad cars. However, with the rise of automobiles and bus travel, interurban rail ridership declined, and the final interurban run occurred in 1948. Dallas Area Rapid Transit, or DART, acquired the Monroe Shops building in 1993. Following a major renovation that began in 2009, the building reopened in 2011 as the DART Police headquarters. Monroe Shops holds a significant place in history, having been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. It also became the first publicly owned building on the National Register to achieve LEED Platinum Certification, recognizing its sustainable renovation. This site represents a key part of Dallas's early transportation infrastructure and its adaptive reuse for modern public service.
