Oak Lawn Methodist Episcopal Church, South
historic place
The Oak Lawn Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in Dallas, Texas, began with the efforts of Reverend Marcus H. Cullum. He preached in a grove on Turtle Creek. Citizens then built a school-church house on land donated by the Dickason-Sale family. On September 20, 1874, Reverend Cullum founded the church at the opening of that building. A larger building with spires was erected in 1889. The current structure was built between 1911 and 1915, and later enlarged in 1928 and 1950. The church's name has changed due to alterations in its national organization. Membership grew from 20 in 1874 to over 2,000. This site's historical marker was erected in 1974 by the Texas Historical Commission. It marks a significant location in Dallas's religious and community development.
