Purvin--Hexter Building

historic place

The Purvin-Hexter Building, located at 2038 Commerce Street in Dallas, is a historic two-story commercial structure. Its construction began around 1899 and was completed in 1901. The building later saw a rear addition around 1910, and its north and east facades were modified in 1923. This building is significant as a representative example of commercial architecture common at the beginning of the 20th century. It is also notable for its ownership remaining within the same family for 98 years. The Purvin-Hexter Building is associated with Jacob Purvin, a Jewish merchant, and his business associate Victor Hexter, a Jewish lawyer. Their contributions embody the commercial and social impact that Jewish citizens had on Dallas's development and history. The building has largely survived intact since 1901, retaining much of its architectural integrity. It offers a tangible link to Dallas's commercial expansion on the eastern edge of downtown during the early 1900s.
