Santa Fe Terminal Buildings No.1 and No. 2

historic place

The Santa Fe Terminal Buildings No. 1 and No. 2 are historic places located in Dallas, Texas. Constructed in 1924, these buildings were part of a larger complex. Architects Lloyd R. Whitson and F. Cowderie Dale designed the structures. The complex served as the headquarters for the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. It also functioned as the Southwest's largest merchandising center. Building No. 1, a twenty-story office building, and Building No. 2, a ten-story warehouse, were connected by an extensive system of underground railroad tunnels. During World War II, the U.S. Government acquired Building No. 1. It then served as the headquarters for the U.S. Army 8th Service Command and an enlistment center, playing a role in the war effort. Building No. 2 was later renovated and converted into apartments. The Santa Fe Terminal Buildings No. 1 and No. 2 were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. They are also recognized as Dallas Landmarks. These buildings represent a significant era in Dallas's commercial development and its historical contributions.
