Sharrock, Everard Jr., Farmstead

historic place

The Everard Sharrock, Jr. Farmstead in Dallas, Texas, is a historic place. It was part of the Peters Colony, an early north Texas settlement. Everard Sharrock, Jr., born in 1826, established his homestead here in 1847 on 640 acres. The Sharrock family left Texas in 1853. Irish immigrant Thomas J. Young then acquired the property. His son, Andrew A. Young, born in 1843, built the farmhouse in 1872. The farmstead includes a log cabin, a log barn, a hand-dug well, and a root cellar. These structures, built of eastern red cedar and limestone, all date from 1847. They represent pre-railroad folk log construction, using local materials. The City of Dallas acquired the property in 2006. It became a Dallas landmark in 2013 and a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2016. This farmstead is the earliest known collection of log structures in the Dallas area still on its original site.
