Shiels, Thomas, House

historic place

The Thomas Shiels House, located at 4602 Reiger Avenue in Dallas, Texas, was built around 1906. This residence showcases a blend of late 19th and early 20th-century architectural styles, featuring elements of Queen Anne, Craftsman, and Prairie School designs. Thomas Shiels, the original owner, was vice-president of Citizens Planing Mill, a company that produced custom woodwork. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1861 and became a carpenter after moving to Texas at age ten. The house is an example of the single-family residences constructed during East Dallas's significant period of residential development between 1903 and 1929. It reflects a shift in domestic architectural tastes during the early 20th century. The Thomas Shiels House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 and designated a Dallas Landmark in 2007. Its architectural integrity and historical context make it a noteworthy site in Dallas.
