Silberstein, Ascher, School

historic place

The Ascher Silberstein School, a historic place in Dallas County, Texas, was constructed in 1922. This two-story building in South Dallas features Renaissance Revival architectural detailing. It was named for Ascher Silberstein, a Dallas businessman who emigrated from Germany about 1878. He left five thousand dollars to the Dallas Public Schools upon his death in 1909. The school initially served local residential communities. In 1953, the Dallas school board designated the building as a 'Negro' school, changing its name to Charles B. Rice School. A new Ascher Silberstein School for white students opened in 1956. The original 1922 building remains an active educational facility, reflecting a notable part of Dallas's history.
