Spake, Jacob and Eliza, House
historic place
The Jacob and Eliza Spake House is a historic place in Dallas, Texas, located at 2600 State Street. This residence was constructed between 1889 and 1890. Edward T. Overand, Eliza's father, built the house as a wedding present for his daughter and Jacob Spake, who married in October 1889. Jacob Spake was notably the first employee of the G. H. Schoellkopf Leather Goods Company, later becoming its Comptroller and a board member. The house exhibits an ornate Victorian Italianate architectural style, a design that is a rare example within Dallas. The Jacob and Eliza Spake House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 21, 1985. It also received designation as a Dallas Landmark Historic District Contributing Property on March 19, 1986. After Eliza's death in 1909, the house was converted into a duplex, and by the 1930s, it became a rooming house. The house has since undergone restoration. This property is significant for its distinctive architecture and its reflection of late 19th-century Dallas development.
