Stoneleigh Court Hotel, Dallas, Texas
historic place
The Stoneleigh Court Hotel in Dallas, Texas, opened on October 18, 1923. Designed by architect Frank J. Woerner, it introduced a new luxury apartment hotel concept to the city. This Beaux-Arts masterpiece offered private kitchens and maid service, setting a new standard for upscale living. It was one of Dallas's earliest high-rise apartment hotels and was once envisioned as the tallest building west of the Mississippi. In 1934, Colonel Harry E. Stewart purchased the property. He added the first penthouse in Texas, commissioning designer Dorothy Draper to reimagine the interiors. Draper introduced a bold style, incorporating imported 500-year-old Italian marble and English oak. The hotel became a significant gathering place, hosting notable figures like Judy Garland, Elvis Presley, and Frank Lloyd Wright. The Stoneleigh Court Hotel is a celebrated National Historic Landmark, recognized for its architectural significance and its enduring role in Dallas's social history.
