Texas Theatre

historic place

The Texas Theatre, a historic place in Dallas County, opened on April 21, 1931. Designed by architect W. Scott Dunne, it was the largest suburban theater in Dallas at the time. The theater featured an "atmospheric" design with Venetian influences, including a Venetian court theme, sound effects, and a ceiling designed to resemble a night sky with twinkling stars. It was also the first theater in Dallas to have air conditioning. On November 22, 1963, the Texas Theatre became a site of national importance when Lee Harvey Oswald was apprehended in its auditorium following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The theater has undergone renovations over the decades. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2003 and designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2013. Today, the Texas Theatre continues to operate as a historic cinema and event space.
