The Busch Building in Dallas, Texas
historic place
The Busch Building, located in Dallas, Texas, was completed in 1913. Beer magnate Adolphus Busch had this seventeen-story structure built as a complementary retail and office facility for his nearby Adolphus Hotel. Designed by the St. Louis architectural firm of Barnett, Hayes & Barnett, in association with Lang and Witchell of Dallas, the building is a significant example of Late Gothic Revival architecture. Its design features a strong vertical emphasis with Gothic pinnacles and spires, highlighted by fine terra cotta details. The A. Harris department store, a thriving Dallas business, initially occupied the lower floors. In 1919, the Kirby Investment Company acquired the building, and it became known as the Kirby Building. A historical marker for the Busch-Kirby Building was erected in 1988 by the Texas Historical Commission. This building is recognized as a Dallas Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It stands as an early example of a Gothic Revival skyscraper in the nation.
