Titche-Goettinger Department Store, Dallas
historic place
The Titche-Goettinger Department Store began in Dallas, Texas, in 1902, founded by Edward Titche and Max Goettinger. After an early move to the Wilson Building in 1904, construction for its flagship building at Main and St. Paul Streets started in 1928. Designed by architect George Dahl, this Renaissance Revival style building opened in November 1929. It became one of the largest department stores in the Southwest. The store was sold to Hahn Department Stores in December 1928. A 1955 expansion added the first complete escalator service for a building of its size in the Southwest. Titche-Goettinger merged with Joske's in 1979, and the downtown location closed in the late 1980s. Today, the historic building houses apartments, retail, and the Universities Center at Dallas. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, recognizing its architectural and commercial importance.
