Viola Courts Apartments
historic place
The Viola Courts Apartments, a historic place in Dallas, Texas, was built in 1923. This three-story brick building contains twelve apartments. Its architecture combines Revival styles with Craftsman details and an interpretation of the Art Deco style. Viola Courts was designed as a transitional residential building in east Dallas. It was situated between the expensive homes of Swiss Avenue and Munger Place and the residential areas nearer downtown. Its tenants included professionals, businessmen, and single or retired individuals. The apartments featured one-bedroom layouts, gas fireplaces, and baths with sea green tiles and Art Deco maroon geometric patterns. The Viola Courts Apartments is considered the best intact example of middle and upper-middle-class apartment buildings constructed in east Dallas after 1916. It is also the earliest local structure of its type to remain unaltered. In 1984, the Viola Courts Apartments was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This designation acknowledges its architectural and historical importance in Dallas County.
