Dickens County Courthouse and Jail
historic place
The Dickens County Courthouse and Jail stands in Dickens, Texas. This historic place includes a courthouse built in 1893. Designed by E.L. Aiken, the courthouse was constructed in a Romanesque Revival style. It originally featured a central domed tower. In 1936, the courthouse underwent remodeling, which removed this central tower. The present Dickens County Jail, a two-story stone structure, was built in 1909. It is located northeast of the courthouse and shares similar architectural details. Dickens County was created in 1876 and organized in 1891. In December 1962, the courthouse received the Texas State Historical Survey Committee's State Medallion. The jail has continuously served the county since its completion. These buildings represent significant early structures in Dickens County's history.
