Underwood, Ammon, House

historic place

The Ammon Underwood House, a historic place in East Columbia, Brazoria County, stands in what was once the noted old river port town of Marion during the Republic of Texas era. The initial portion of this structure, built with hand-hewn cedar, was erected around 1835 by colonist Thomas W. Nibbs. Between 1838 and 1839, merchant, civic leader, and soldier Ammon Underwood, who lived from 1810 to 1887, purchased and enlarged the house. In 1839, Ammon Underwood married Rachel Jane Carson, a daughter of William and Catherine Carson from Austin's original colony. The Underwoods hosted many notable Texans, including President Anson Jones. This site was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1970. The Ammon Underwood House offers a glimpse into early Texas settlement and the lives of its prominent residents.
