Fort Griffin Brazos River Bridge

historic place

The Fort Griffin Brazos River Bridge is a historic landmark in Shackelford County, Texas. It spans the Clear Fork of the Brazos River, about half a mile northeast of Fort Griffin. This bridge was constructed in 1885 by the King Iron Bridge and Manufacturing Company of Cleveland, Ohio. It features a 110-foot pin-connected through Pratt truss, with plate girder approaches, for an overall length of 226 feet. The Shackelford County Commissioners awarded an $8,050 contract for its construction to connect Albany and Throckmorton. The bridge is the oldest functioning bridge in Shackelford County. It is also one of Texas's oldest remaining truss bridges and the last pin-connected Pratt through truss in the county. While truck traffic is now prohibited, the bridge continues to carry local vehicles. This structure represents a significant example of late nineteenth-century bridge building practices in Texas.
