Austin, Stephen F., Elementary School
historic place
This is the site of Stephen F. Austin Elementary School in Fort Worth, Texas. The building first opened in 1892 as the Sixth Ward School, also known as the Broadway School. It was designed by Messer, Sanguinet and Messer. The two-story structure features Richardsonian Romanesque architecture, with red brick walls and quarry-faced white limestone trim. In 1904, the school was renamed Stephen F. Austin Elementary. An addition in 1909, designed by Sanguinet & Staats, significantly expanded the building. The school closed its doors in 1977. In 1980, the Williamson-Dickie Manufacturing Company purchased the property and adapted it for their corporate headquarters. The Stephen F. Austin Elementary School building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This site represents an important example of early public school architecture in Fort Worth.
