Heritage Park Plaza
historic place
Heritage Park Plaza, located in Fort Worth, Texas, is a historic place in Tarrant County. Designed by landscape architect Lawrence Halprin, the plaza was formally dedicated in 1980. It was built as part of the 1976 U.S. Bicentennial celebration. The plaza commemorates Fort Worth's founding as the Camp Worth military post in 1849. Situated on a bluff overlooking the Trinity River, the plaza features a design with interconnected outdoor rooms. Halprin's design included water gardens, controlled views, and sculptural elements. A concrete wall within the plaza displays an inlaid plan of the original fort complex, veiled by a waterfall. Heritage Park Plaza was closed to the public in 2007 due to its condition. In 2010, it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places for its significance in landscape architecture. Efforts are currently underway to rehabilitate and reopen the plaza. The site matters historically as a significant example of modern landscape design commemorating the city's origins.
