J. L. Sealy Building
historic place
The J. L. Sealy Building is located at 801 South Main Street in Fort Worth, Texas. This two-story brick structure was completed in 1916. Contractor C. H. Messer built the building for J. L. Sealy, a local butcher. Sealy operated a grocery and meat market in one of the first-floor storefronts. The building also contained apartments on the first floor, with more apartments or a transient hotel on the second story. An integral porch on the north elevation provided access to some of these residential spaces. Architecturally, it is a distinctive example of a two-part commercial block building, characterized by its brick construction and differentiated façade that reflected its combined private and public uses. The J. L. Sealy Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. Its historical significance is rooted in its architecture, representing a typical early 20th-century commercial and residential structure in Fort Worth.
