Montgomery Ward and Company Building, Fort Worth, Texas
historic place
The Montgomery Ward and Company Building in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, is a historic place. Constructed in 1928, this eight-story structure served as a regional retail and mail-order house for Montgomery Ward. The company, founded in Chicago in 1872, built this as one of nine regional centers across the U.S. Built of reinforced concrete, the building featured a Mission Revival style. Thos. S. Byrne, Ltd. was the original contractor. Its design allowed trains to unload directly into the warehouse. The structure survived the 1949 flood and a 2000 tornado. After Montgomery Ward closed in 2001, the building was redeveloped. It remains a landmark reflecting Fort Worth's history of large-scale retail and mail-order business.
