Our Mother of Mercy School
historic place
In South Fort Worth, at 801 Verbena Street, stands a building with significant history. This structure was built in 1931 by members of a local Catholic Church, guided by Reverend N.P. Dennis. It originally housed Our Lady of Mercy school. In 1950, the school was renamed Our Mother of Mercy. This institution holds the distinction of being Fort Worth's first African-American Catholic school. The school served the community until its closure in 1958. Recognizing its historical importance, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. Two years later, in 2008, the structure underwent rehabilitation. Today, it serves as a meeting room for the LMA Chamblee branch of the Fort Worth library. Our Mother of Mercy School is historically significant for its role in providing education to the African-American community in Fort Worth.
