Sanger Brothers Building (1925)
historic place
The Sanger Brothers Building, located at 515 Houston Street in Fort Worth, Texas, was constructed in 1925. Designed by architect Wiley G. Clarkson, this eight-story structure opened on August 29, 1925, as the main downtown location for the Sanger Brothers Department Store. When it first opened, the store offered unique amenities, including an indoor putting green and a complete hospital room staffed with a trained nurse. The building played a role in Fort Worth's retail history. After Sanger Brothers moved to a new location in 1929, the building housed Lerner Shops from 1930 to 1947. Meacham's Department Store then occupied the site from 1947 until 1971. Later, in 1981, the Color Tile Company used the building for its administrative offices. The Sanger Brothers Building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. It is recognized for its significance in commerce and architecture, illustrating the changing dynamics of downtown department stores in the early and mid-twentieth century. Today, the building continues its legacy, housing residential lofts and ground-floor retail.
