The Fair Building, Fort Worth

historic place

The Fair Building, a historic place in Fort Worth, Texas, is located at 307 West Seventh Street in Tarrant County. It was constructed in 1930. Architect Wyatt C. Hedrick designed the nineteen-story building, which was financed by Houston developer Jesse H. Jones. The Fair department store, established in Fort Worth in 1890, occupied the first six floors. Other tenants included various businesses and professionals. The building was constructed of reinforced concrete, faced with buff-brown brick, and featured ornamental cast stone trim and a Gothic-style frieze. The Fair store closed in 1963. In 1964, the building was sold to Service Life Insurance Company and the Bank of Commerce. The first two floors were then altered, with original ornamentation replaced by white marble. The Fair Building contributes to Fort Worth's architectural history as part of the proposed Downtown Skyscrapers National Register Thematic Group.
