Robertson County Courthouse and Jail

historic place

The Robertson County Courthouse and Jail in Franklin, Texas, is a historic place. The jail was constructed in 1879. Plans for the courthouse began in 1879, and construction started in 1881. The courthouse was completed in 1882 at a cost of $30,000. This white limestone building is the fourth to serve as the Robertson County Courthouse. Architect F. E. Ruffini designed the courthouse in the Second Empire style. In 1879, the county seat moved to Morgan. However, because another Texas post office was named Morgan, the town was renamed Franklin, after the original county seat. The courthouse has undergone remodeling since its initial construction. For example, its mansard roof was removed in 1924 and later restored in the 2010s. These structures have historically served the governmental functions of Robertson County.
