Lower South Grape Creek School
historic place
The Lower South Grape Creek School, located in Gillespie County, Texas, began with a log cabin schoolhouse built by the community in 1871. Theodor Huelsemann taught here from 1875 to 1880. On May 12, 1889, it was formally named the Lower South Grape Creek School, District #21. The present limestone school building was constructed in 1901. This school served local students until 1960, when it consolidated with the Fredericksburg Independent School District. The building then became a community center. Its historical importance was recognized in 1994 as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. In 2005, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This site reflects the history of rural education in Gillespie County.
