Luckenbach School
historic place
The Luckenbach School, a historic place in Gillespie County, Texas, traces its origins to 1855. That year, pioneer settler Peter Pehl deeded a two-acre tract for a schoolhouse. The first school was a log building, with Herman Toepperwein as its initial teacher. An addition of native limestone was constructed in 1881. A separate stone teacherage was also built in the 1860s. The original log building was used until 1905, when a new native limestone schoolhouse was completed. The Luckenbach School continued operations until 1964, when it consolidated with the Fredericksburg District. In 1982, the Texas Historical Commission erected a marker here, designating it a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. This site documents the history of rural education in Gillespie County.
