Meusebach Creek School

historic place

Meusebach Creek School, a historic place in Fredericksburg, Gillespie County, Texas, has a notable past. The first of its four buildings was a small log cabin. Significantly, in the post-Civil War years, as early as 1869, the school educated children of freed slaves alongside other students, making it one of the earliest integrated schools in the South. The log cabin was replaced by a stone structure in the 1880s, followed by a frame building in 1897. The current building, the fourth, was constructed in 1931. The school initially provided bilingual instruction in German and English, though state law later required English-only teaching for most subjects. Meusebach Creek School consolidated with the Fredericksburg Independent School District in 1954. Today, this historic site functions as a community center and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 6, 2005. Its story illustrates the development of education and early social integration in rural Texas.
