Rheingold School, Fredericksburg, Texas

historic place

The Rheingold School, a historic place in Gillespie County, Texas, began in 1873. William Gold donated land for the first schoolhouse, a 12 by 14-foot log structure. In 1881, a new school building was constructed, and the original log cabin became the teacherage. A larger frame schoolhouse was built around 1900. This school educated up to eight grades. English was used for lessons, while German was used for scoldings. The Rheingold School consolidated with Fredericksburg in 1949. Since 1950, the Rheingold Community Club has used the building as a community center. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 6, 2005. This site illustrates the history of rural education in Gillespie County.
